Apple iPhone 4 Full Flash to Cricket Wireless (talk, text, Internet, MMS)

CREDITS: After someone called me a genius, I decided that I should probably post some thanks to the REAL players involved in making this happen in my mind. If I missed someone please let me know.

DFS - creators of CDMA Tools
Amoamare - repo location for the Comm center patch and Cricket bundle.
Rich Hathaway - also posted a repo locaton for a Comm center patch and misc postings on CDMA Gurus.
ljm715 - the original IPCC I used was from this poster (CDMA Gurus)

This is a work in progress. I have learned so much about this in the past few days that it is hard to weed out what didn't work from what did.

I will try to make this process painless for those who decide to go down this path in the future. The results are a beautiful, fully flashed iPhone 4.

NOTE: The instructions will cover the Verizon iPhone first because that is what I used. Sprint involves obtaining the SPC and probably saving the files in a different location (probably the Sprint folder).

In order to program the phone you will have to Jailbreak it. You need to be able to access system files and install other items to make a connection to DFS and load a PRL.

We've had success with untethered Jailbreak on 5.0.1 and tethered on 5.1.

    Software Requirements:

    CDMA Tool (by DFS)

    - Download the demo. When you purchase the OTA flashing for the iPhone, it will upgrade you to the "Light" version.

    iTunes

    - Contains drivers that are required. You also need iTunes in general.

    DiskAid

    - Browsing iPhone Apps contents and transferring files to or from an iOS device has never been easier with DiskAid. It automatically discovers all Apps and allows to copy files, folders or even complete file trees!

    File Requirements:

Custom IPCC for Cricket (by ljm1715 @ CDMAGurus)

    - This will be required for MMS. It should also contain a Cricket PRL which can be replaced. Becomes OPTIONAL if amoamare's Cricket Bundle is used (read in AMO section).

    Recommended Downloads:

    plist Editor

    - In the Mac OS X and iPhone OS, property list files are files that store serialized objects. Property list files use the filename extension .plist. Mac OS X 10.2 introduced a new format where property list files are stored as binary files. Starting with Mac OS X 10.4, this is the default format for preference files.

These plist files are in the IPCC (Carrier Bundle) file. You might want to be able to peek inside those. To open an IPCC file, I changed the file extension to .zip and opened them up in Winrar. In Winrar you can edit the files inside the zip and save them back to the zip immediately. I feel like this causes the least modifications to the file structure of the IPCC or Carrier Bundle.

PRL - This is in the recommended downloads because the IPCC file will contain or should contain a valid PRL. You might want to choose your own though. Please visit the PRL thread: http://www.cricketusers.com/flashing...rl-thread.html

    Jailbreak the Device

This step is required for at least a couple of reasons. You're going to need access to certain files on the device and be able to install software packages using Cydia.

    Wiki-

    Cydia is a
    software application

    for
    iOS

that enables a user to find and install
    software packages

(including apps, interface customizations, and system extensions) on a
    jailbroken

    iPhone

    ,
    iPod Touch

    or
    iPad

. Cydia is the main independent third-party
    digital distribution

    platform for software on iOS.
    [2]

Many of the software packages available through Cydia are free, and it also includes several hundred packages for sale through the Cydia Store payment system with a commission setup similar to the
    App Store

    .
    [3]

Most of these packages focus on providing customizations and modifications (often called "tweaks") that can only run on jailbroken devices (since the App Store is limited to distributing self-contained apps).
    [4]

You might want to read up on the difference between a tethered and untethered Jailbreaking:

Apple iPhone - The difference between tethered and untethered Jailbreak

5.0.1 Video - Part 1 Flashing the iPhone 4 to Cricket Wireless

5.1 Video - Part 1.1 Rebooting the iPhone 4 if Using Tethered Jailbreak

Instructions for a couple of releases:

Jailbreak the iPhone 4 on 5.1 (Tethered) for Flashing to Cricket Wireless

Jailbreak the iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 (Untethered) for Flashing to Cricket Wireless

Jailbreak the iPhone 4 on 4.2.6 (Untethered) for Flashing to Cricket Wireless

Install OpenSSH (required for use with DFS)

    AMO Section

The following information came from amoamare and was posted on
    cdmagurus.com

. I have installed the bundle on a few versions (5.1, 4.2.6, 5.0.1). Don't hold him responsible for anything. He posts more on CDMA Gurus and it would behoove you to look through all of his posts there (
    Search Results - CDMA Gurus

    )

The instructions here could replace the need for the PRL and MMS section below. CDMA Tool 4.0.0.3 can now write PRLs to Apple devices.

    --Start--

Add Repo (CU EDIT: Cydia > Manage > Sources > Edit > Add)

    Code:
    www.easyflashstudio.com/cydia
Install the commcenter patch for iOS 5.0.1.
DO NOT INSTALL THE BUNDLE IT DOES NOT WORK FOR 5.0.1

This will patched you commcenter to accept unsigned bundles.

IF YOU HAVE A SPRINT PHONE AND WANT TO RESET THE MSL TO 0'S
Look at the old 4.2.7 or 4.2.6 Bundle from Verizon, you will see at the bottom something about security with the scripts for MSL, COPY THAT AND PASTE IT IN YOUR BUNDLE. After a reboot you will have all 0's for your MSL. YOu can then activate the phone on cricket.

Also you need to increment your bundle version by 1

Passwords are in HEX so cricket would be 637269636B6574
Username remove the default: keep the rest and change the @blahblah to @mycricket.com or what ever carrier it is.

I will add more including how to read from CDMWS i0S 5 does not seem to write passwords this way so thats the last thing needs to be figured out is getting the phone to write the password to the nv.

    Read more:
    iOS 5.0.1 CommCenter

    --End--

    Changing PRLs

UPDATE: Version 4.0.0.3 of CDMA Tool can write PRLs to Apple products (iPhone/iPad).

    Alternatives

PDF of instructions (courtesy of DFS):
    http://cdmatool.com/DownloadFiles/Ho...vice%20PRL.pdf

At this point if the ESN is on your account, you should be able to *228 in order to program the phone number for talk/text.

You can choose to modify the IPCC file as well and change the PRL when you enable MMS.

*If you are having problems getting a PRL to stick, read this:

Guide : How to write a new .prl to v-iphone 4 without open ssh-(the simple way)

    Using IPCC for MMS

Usually I would keep the MMS step for last, but since the Internet requires the most focus, I will get the easy parts out of the way.

The custom IPCC should have been downloaded as one of the first steps.

Method 1: You will need to do the following in order to getting iTunes to allow you to use IPCC files.

iPhone | How to Enable Carrier Bundle Support in iTunes 8.2 (Windows)
    Thursday, 18th June 2009, 01:06 am
These are instructions on how to enable support for carrier bundles in iTunes 8.2 for Windows.

You'll notice if you try to update your iPhone carrier settings using the final version of iTunes 8.2 the .ipcc files are greyed out. In order to re-enabled access to these files you will need to follow the simple steps below.

    Step One
    Quit iTunes

    Step Two
Press Windows Key + R to open the run dialog. Enter in cmd then click OK

    Step Three
Enter the following command into the Command Prompt window.

    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

CU NOTE: If you have a 64 bit machine like many of us do now it will probably be...

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    Step Four

Connect your iPhone and click to launch iTunes from your Start Menu.

    Step Five

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left then hold down the Shift key and click the Check for Updates button.

    Step Six

Notice you can now select your .ipcc file as it is not greyed out.

NOTE: In our version we had to use the drop down menu and choose IPCC vs IPSW.

Method 2: Rename the IPCC file .zip. Extract the files. You can choose to not send the PRL if you already have your custom one.

Use DiskAid and delete the files here (back them up first because it couldn't hurt): "/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone/Zeppelin_US.bundle"

Drag the extracted files into the same location. You are pretty much replacing what you deleted.

You may need to do the PrlPushFlag modifications (as seen in the PDF file under the "Changing PRLs" section above).

    Using DFS' CDMA Tool

This was the most difficult part for me, but it doesn't have to be. Just follow the instructions.

I would disable all network connection except the ONE to your router.

Much of the following is courtesy of DFS' user manual. I have added additional information where I thought it was appropriate.

    Requirements:
    • WiFi router (not access point) with fast internet (~2Mb )
    • PC or laptop with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7
    • Apple USB cable and iTunes (OEM is probably the best when it comes to cables, but I had luck with another as well)
    • Both Apple device and PC/laptop must be connected to the same router and have same sub-domain address:

    (Like 192.168.0.xxx):
PC IP: 192.168.0.xxx, iPhone IP: 192.168.1.xxx - wrong connection
PC IP: 192.168.0.xxx, iPhone IP: 192.168.0.xxx - correct connection

    • Your Apple device must be Jailbroken, Cydia and OpenSSH must be installed.

    Connect device to DFS
    ● Connect iPhone 4 CDMA to PC via USB cable and connect to Wi-Fi.
    ● Disable Auto-Lock (Settings -> General -> Auto–Lock -> Never)

*EDIT: In the HDR SCP force release 0 config try EDO_RevA instead. This may yield better data speeds.*

In the screenshot below you can see that it asks for the AAA/HA Shared Secret in HEX. I went to
    Text to Hex Converter Text2Hex

    and converted "cricket" to "637269636b6574"
    .

    OR

Just uncheck the "Enter value in HEX". =) <-- EDIT: Just had a phone that WOULD NOT let the password stick when I unchecked the box and typed in "cricket".

The information in the following picture should have been automatically programmed by Cricket during the *228 procedure. It would be good to read it from your device and make sure that it is similar to mine. By twice it means in both blocks (MIN A / MIN D and MDN / PCS).

CDMA Tool 4.0.0.3 can now write PRLs to Apple devices.

    MISC Notes, Tips, etc:

When installing patches, changing files, etc, you may want to get back into CDMA Tool (freshly started) and recheck your settings. They may have changed.

Upgrading iOS Version on a Jailbroken iPhone:

Pwned DFU, TinyUmbrella NOT running, and hosts NOT set to Cydia. Hit restore and let iTunes download the latest version and update.

Long SMS Fix: (thanks to RLockwich for pointing out the problem)

Use Handcent. Just search in Cydia. It has message sending options where you can break up long texts into multiple texts automatically. Stop sending people long, crazy, jumbled up messages.

    Activation Nag Screen:

Tried to use Amo's bundle and ##626, but it didn't seem to work with a VZW phone. I haven't done any Sprint phones.

If the phone is giving you the non activated state, it seems to mess up the carrier logo and MMS. I wasn't able to *228 a customer's phone, and it was upsetting me. I *228'd the content Mercury, and it worked so I knew it wasn't something in my area. This person lives in TN. I placed the ESN of the iPhone on my account and was able to *228 to get the activated screen on the iPhone. Switched information via DFS back to his.

If it's going to work on the 45 plan, you'll have to setup a proxy. Google that and good luck. Let us know if you find anything. It will probably involve .pac files.

It should just like any other flashed phones. Play with PRLs.

Yes... It's all going to be placed here. There's a lot of info to put up so I'm doing it here and there. Basically it's still not going to be free though because you will need to use CDMA Tool by DFS.

If 100 per phone is too much, encourage your local phone flasher to buy credits in bulk. I'm about to do some more work remotely with a phone to verify some steps.

Yes I believe it can, but any discussion about ESN repairing/cloning will not be allowed because it is illegal.

The iPhone is probably a device that most people don't want to do remotely for a couple of reasons. There are a number of steps involved and it will cost the average flasher $100 just to be able to get it done. This leaves the cost for the end consumer rather high.

It costs 100 per iPhone. Light is thrown in with your 100 dollar purchase.

Startup cost for someone only purchasing one flash is $100.
