  • Ascend 2 Coming Soon, Featuring Gingerbread?

This will possibly cut into the sales of the Samsung Indulge which Cricket recently released. Those who desire a keyboard and faster processor, might hold out and save some more change for it, but most will find the Ascend 2 enough to satisfy their needs. It features a higher megapixel count on it's camera (5.0 vs 3.2) and the same screen resolution vs the Indulge. Initial speculation resulted in us thinking it'd be equipped with an 800mhz processor, but it looks like it's only going to be 600mhz. This is a slight bump over the original Ascend (528mhz).

According to the article below, it looks to be equipped with Gingerbread 2.3 (Android OS). This would be the first Gingerbread device for Cricket. We have heard rumors that the Indulge will receive an update in the future.

SHENZHEN, CHINA—Huawei's low-priced Ascend smartphone was a big hit on Cricket and MetroPCS, selling about 2 million units. So it makes sense the companies would want to follow up. Next week, Cricket will announce the Huawei Ascend 2, its next low-cost Android smartphone. I got some hands-on time with the Ascend 2 here at Huawei's global headquarters.

The Ascend 2 isn't a surprise, like Huawei's dual-core Glory; we first heard about it back in March at CTIA. But the model I saw this week was pretty much a final retail unit; phones are preparing to ship to the U.S., Cricket's vice president of devices Matt Stoiber told me, for an announcement in the first few days of July.

The new phone bumps up some of the Ascend's specs, but it stays in the realm of entry-level Android. This phone has a 3.5-inch, 320-by-480 screen and a 600Mhz, ARM11 Qualcomm processor, similar to the one in the LG Optimus C for Cricket. That's a bump up from the Ascend's 528Mhz processor.

Back in March we'd heard that the phone might have an 800-by-480 screen, but I think in this case the lower-res screen is actually better; that inexpensive Qualcomm processor has trouble pushing a lot of pixels.
The Ascend 2 has a 5-megapixel camera (its predecessor was 3.2 megapixels) along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and support for Cricket's 3G EVDO Rev A network. There's also—thank goodness—a real 3.5mm headphone jack, the omission of which was a big black mark against the original Ascend.

While the Ascend 2 felt snappy enough as I was trying it, it was in its straight-out-of-the-box state and not full of all of the guff with which we usually stuff our smartphones.

Speaking of guff, Huawei and Cricket couldn't resist tweaking the Android Gingerbread (version 2.3) OS here. Huawei's manufacturer skin is pretty light, but it's still definitely a skin. You can change the home screen transition animations, your friends' Facebook updates appear in the address book, and you can juggle around the icons in the app drawer like on an iPhone. I really like that last feature, because anything that helps me manage a large number of Android apps is welcome. Cricket adds its own apps as well, of course.

The phone only has about 140MB of free memory, but it'll come with a 2GB MicroSD card. In October, Cricket will offer an upgrade to its Muve Music service, which gives Cricket subscribers unlimited music downloads as part of their rate plan. (The Ascend 2 won't be the first Muve Music smartphone—that honor belongs to a Samsung phone coming out this summer.)

The Ascend 2 will debut next week for a price similar to the original Ascend, which cost a mere $129 prepaid when it launched.

Personally, I would go with the Huawei Ascend 2 over the LG Optimus C.

First of all, the screen is bigger. You get a 3.5 inch screen on the Ascend 2, compared to a 3.2 inch screen on the Optimus C.

The Ascend 2 was said to have an 800 Mhz processor, and then another source said a 600 Mhz processor. I would say it's going to have an 800 Mhz processor. The Optimus C has a 600 Mhz processor, which would mean the Ascend 2 has another advantage over the Optimus C.

So, I would go with the Ascend 2. Remember, if you don't like it, you can return it within 30 days and 30 minutes of talk time.

The Samsung Galaxy Indulge, in my opinion. The Ascend 2 is cheaper though.

Don't forget about the Glory, if you don't mind waiting until around November. http://www.cricketusers.com/cricket-...oid-phone.html

The Indulge has a better processor at 1 Ghz (rather than 600 Mhz on Ascend 2, and possibly a 800 Mhz processor according to some sources). The Indulge probably has better screen resolution too. Also, the Indulge has a full keyboard, instead of just a touchscreen keyboard like the Ascend 2. I'm not sure, but I think the Ascend 2 ships with Android 2.3 and the Indulge ships with Android 2.2. If so, the Indulge might get an update in the future.

I recommend getting the Glory, for around $150 (probably less) rather than getting the Indulge for around $300. That gives you $150 you can hold on to and save for the Huawei Glory.

The Huawei Glory is going to be the better phone. It has better specifications, including a better processor, larger screen, better camera, etc. The thing is, you will need to wait until December for that, and it is going to be about $299 (or $279 after online discounts). The Huawei Ascend 2 is coming out soon, probably next week, and should be around $149 (maybe $129 after online discounts).

If you have any more questions, just ask.

would you say that for the price of the hauwei 2, its better than the lg optimus c? hands down?

and also would you think this phone is worth the hype that its getting ?

Personally, I would go with the Ascend 2. It is running a newer version of Android and it has a bigger screen. If you'd like a phone by a company that is better know, you probably should go with the LG. If you're the type of person that will buy store brand over name brand and be happy with it, maybe you should get the Huawei.

Like I said, I'd get the Huawei, for three main reasons.

      1) I'm starting to like Huawei. I have the Huawei Ascend now, and like it. I'm also seeing what Huawei is coming out with in the future, like the Huawei Glory and the first 4G device for Cricket.

      2) The Huawei Ascend 2 has a bigger screen than the Optimus C.

      3) The Huawei Ascend 2 is running a newer version of Android than the Optimus C.

The Ascend 2 should be coming out in the first week of July.

      The Ascend 2 has a 3.5 inch touchscreen. It's a reasonable size.

You're welcome, and if you have any more questions, feel free to post.

Yeah, it should be coming out the first week in July.

I don't know about any price changes. They might drop it when the Huawei Ascend 2 comes out, but it will be more likely that they will drop it closer to when the Huawei Glory comes out in November.

No one really knows. It would all be speculation at this point. I'll ask my dealer though.

I use to have a Subie... Legacy GT though. Didn't have it for that long. I'm guessing the linkback might have come from you... (NASIOC)

Yeah, I don't know when the price for the Indulge is going to change. My guess would be when the next Android phone comes out that is comparable to that. The Huawei Ascend 2 doesn't have a 1 Ghz processor or a physical keyboard, so it's not really competition for the Indulge. The only thing extra appealing to the Huawei Ascend 2 is the price.

      We will see though.
