  • Leap On Target to Cover 25 Million with LTE by End of 2012

Leap Wireless, the parent company of prepaid wireless provider Cricket, said that the company is launching a trial Long Term Evolution market in Tucson, Ariz., later this year followed by a wider roll-out through next year that is expected to cover 25 million POPs by the end of 2012. Leap will launch LTE-enabled smartphones for Cricket in mid-to-late 2012. The company says it has enough spectrum (23MHz in most markets) to run LTE along side its existing CDMA network, though the company will probably look to acquire more spectrum when the opportunity arises. Cricket also plans to expand its retail availability by another 200 company-owned locations, and 5,500 locations through a national retailer such as Best Buy or Wal-Mart. The company plans to add to the number of Muve Music-compatible phones and focus on increasing the number of subscribers to that service, as well as bolstering its line-up of smartphones by the end of the year. Leap didn't specify what markets would follow Tucson for its LTE roll out.
