Angry My Mercury is freaking out

I got the Huawei Mercury M886 back shortly after it came out back in February. I rooted it on day 1, really only for titanium backup. I never did the firmware update after reading about the problems people were having with it, and besides, I don't want/need/use Muve Music. So I stayed with the stock 2.3.5. I've had no problems with it until the other day.

On Tuesday night I had last used it to make a call. I plugged it up to charge overnight. The next morning, I received a text message from a friend, and was in the middle of answering the text (using Handcent) when the phone started freaking out. The app crash messages came at me fast and furiously. Main ones I could catch were Google Application Framework, Gmail, Google+, Huawei Launcher. There were more, but as I said, they came up quickly, each covering the previous. After all the app crashes, the launcher screen blanked and it eventually started rebooting continuously.

Not knowing what was going on, I pulled the battery, and restarted. It would boot, and I'd get the lock screen, while items loaded (the built in Traffic Manager, Gague Battery widget and notification icon, WGN Weather, etc). Everything was fine until I unlocked, then the crash messages came at me fast and furiously again, then freezing, then going into a reboot cycle again.

I tried going in and doing a factory wipe/reset, but strangely it didn't take. Nothing was wiped, all my settings were still there, and the problem persisted. I pulled my SD card out, which made a slight difference. I could get to the launcher screen, and into the settings before the crash messages started popping up. It doesn't freeze, but it doesn't let me do much, either. I tried the factory reset/wipe from the settings, but that didn't take either.

It's insured, so I tried going to a corporate Cricket store. They're out of them, and so are all the other Chicagoland stores, the manager told me. What he didn't tell me, however, was something I learned on here in the forums: Apparently Cricket has pulled the Mercury from sale!

So what's going on? I don't know why it freaked out, as _nothing_ has changed in at least 3 months, except for app updates. Just like my computers, I don't click things that are suspicious, and I'm super careful, so I don't *think* I got a virus/worm/malware/etc on it. So was there some sort of backend update that has essentially bricked my phone that I'm not aware of?

Any information at all that you could share would be appreciated.

The 2.3.5 shipped devices have defects as you described. Currently there is no fix for it.

Oriax: Thanks for the info. So any word at what Cricket is doing to remedy the situation? Will there be a fix? Or are they going to just shrug their shoulders and tell me to buy a new phone? As you can imagine, I'm not thrilled that I have a $250 brick that I've not done anything to cause.

I know how you feel, and they just pulled the Mercury off the market lol so screwed basically. You can go see if you can get it replaced for a different phone or something.

I'm on my second mercury. The first just decided to turn itself off and never return. took it in to store and got a replacement on the spot. For 20.00 this one better last or it could end up on eBay.

I got mine in December, a few days after Christmas, as well. So there is a difference in the ones that came out 2 months after?

I never installed ANY Cricket updates or accepted and downloaded any MMS messages from them. I remember one about language preferences.... I deleted it since it was in English, lol.

I hope mine doesn't decide to go the way of most China products....

Well, here's an update. I went back to the store today, and talked to one of the reps. She said that because I was on the list, they had gotten a few mercury's in for replacements. So we proceeded exchanging the phone. I told her that I knew about the defect that caused cricket to pull them from sale (she couldn't confirm or deny that... looked uncomfortable about answering that), and wondered if/when the fix was released would it be an OTA update or would I need to bring it in to the store. She said if there's an update, I'll get a text message from Cricket about it, and I can always bring it in to them to update. She either really wasn't too knowledgable, or couldn't talk about what she knew (it was, after all, a corporate store).

So for now I have a replacement Mercury with the 2.3.6/Muve update preinstalled (I had the pre-Muve version with 2.3.5). Let's hope it lasts until the update. I don't plan on rooting it (as much as that pains me) until after there's a fix.

Im pretty sure the defect of the app force closing is a Software issue not a Hardware issue therefore if i was put the custom recovery and ur rom software should have been legit then, My wife phone never had a issue till the little muve music update

It's hardware my friend, the 2.3.5 shipped devices (most) end up fc every app, and every reboot will revert all changes made. <---- that's the defect. As the old merc has different specs.

If the device was on 2.3.6 stock when you got it and the muve update was the source of the problem then it is software.
