    Question Buying ZTE Score Considerations

I am considering buying a ZTE x500, however I have a few questions that I couldn't get answered through google.

    - I not planning on getting a service (of any kind) for this phone for quite a while, due to budget issues. I would like to know if it's possible to use the phone, like the Wi-Fi and other capabilities without getting a service. So, until then I would like to use this as a tablet-like device.

-On this phone, is it required to activate with Google before being able to use it for any purposes? Does that activation have to be over 3G? If so, I assume that rooting would be the only way to get around that?

-I previously purchased a Android Phone second hand in order to use as a MP3 player/ iPod and I couldn't do it because it was locked unless activated with Google over 3G. Eventually I had to sell it, and it was of no use to me.

I would like to know how I can activate this without purchasing any service plan. I don't want to end up with a device that i can't use for a while. Can anyone link me to the appropriate procedures that I should follow?

Thanks in advance for your help guys!

You should be able to use it without activating it. I've been using an Android phone that isn't currently activated and it works fine over WiFi.

You should have the option to set up the Google account later, if I remember correctly. You then should be able to do it over WiFi.

I've never heard of the MP3 Player not working because it wasn't activated with Google.. You should be able to activate with Google over WiFi. There is a company called Republic Wireless, and they want you to use WiFi. It's actually required to activate the phone. So, unless they changed something to make it work on just their phone, you should be able to set up Google over WiFi. If for some reason the music player doesn't work (which I really think it should), you should be able to download another one to use from the Market over WiFi.

If you purchase the phone online, the plan comes with it. You might need to find a dealer to see if you can purchase just the phone.

at our stores we will sell a phone at full MSRP (manufacturers suggested retail price) if you buy it without service with cricket. i also suggest a higher quality phone, the zte score is only an entry level android.

avenue, was your phone activated with Google at one point or when it was bought?
My previous experience was with a T-Mobile myTouch 3G which I bought used, but factory resetted. It demanded that it have a SIM with 3G access in order to activate with Google to even allow me to "login to" the handset, like just to access the homescreen. It wouldn't even let me do the Google Activation over Wi-Fi or bypass, etc.

Now, the ZTE Score is a pay-as-you-go phone so, this is a slightly different scenario and I want to make sure I am not wasting my money by buying it. It would be nice if someone could clarify this for me.

indica, since this is a pay-as-you-go phone, I don't suppose what you said applies?

Well, all I really want at this point is a clarification on how the Google (Account) Activation works on this Android phone. Will I be able use all other aspects of the phone without activating with Google?

the pay-as-you-go is different yes, those are available through cricket's retail partners (best buy, walmart etc) those you just pay for the phone. as far as i know all cricket's phones are able to utilize wifi without being on the cricket network or any of the crud t-mobile put you through. we don't use sim cards. all features will be available unless they are dependent on google, you need log into your google account for google android market, or google email etc.
