They take up space. And find any bad files on pirated and market apps. If its a pirated app you never know what you are really downloading. And do not!!!! Download any battery management apps that are not in the market or have lower then 4stars. Trust me. And any battery upgrade app is just an app to steal your info.

You don't need antivirus unless you go around pirating 99c apps, then good luck. Google will remotely wipe any apps it find are viral that you get from the official Android market.

...actually I use "Lookout" which not only gives me AV (and a warm fuzzy feeling) but Machine Tracking, if need be. I had a phone Stolen a while back, though I never was able to recover it, I tracked it around town for days before I eventually Locked it Down! unless someone flashes it (as I understand things) it's a Brick! At least I won't be paying their Bill.
    In a single comment...WHY NOT???

I heard that it kills battery power and the phone locater and scream don't work, other than that I've yet to hear about anyone getting a virus on there phone.
