I have rooted my ZTE Engage hah hah! here is how i did it.
    1. install android sdk
    2. go to
    Root MANY ANDROID! [Upd: 18.12.2012] - xda-developers

    and download Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18
    3. follow instructions for Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry
    4. enjoy
note: There is no recovery for this phone yet so use online nandroid backup to make backups after your are rooted. Before your are rooted use adb backup to back up the phone. Look it up if you don't know how to use it! Also I have decide to try and compile a custom recovery for this phone. If I am successfull I will post my work. If not sorry and may the force be with you!

oh yeah one more thing you really don't have to install the sdk. It's just a really cool tool once you learn it.

and if your running windows you're going to need Cygwin. I use linux so don't ask me how to install Cygwin.

Just saying rather see some proof that it works on this specific device not just where this root was leaked. = Sony devices

Yeah the thread is in Sony Devices but if you read the thread the exploit used is in a timing remount for android adb restore on ics and jb and it even states that it should work for most ics jb roms. I guarantee you it works on this phone and it's actually quite simple.

What do you mean ROM? You can root a device and not use a custom ROM.

Ran the script a few times, and despite saying successful, it didn't work.

One time I had to hard reset. It was acting weird... Google Play was removed along with other programs that were installed.

AWESOME! Thank you Jared M. Ward for the most helpful information. worked first time! I mess with my phones for fun, a total newb but i still managed with the help of this thread. Here is what i did...

Googled Android SDK...downloaded and tried to install. SDK installer insisted on Java SE so visited Oracle.com for that download. Installed. Tried SDK install again but still no Java recognition...(if you're running Windows 7 x 64 like me you may have this problem. Just rename the installed java.exe something like java2.exe and SDK will pick it up, next go 'round) I couldnt get Root_with_restore_by_Bin4ry to download from the link at the beginning of the post, but again, Google is your friend...figure it out. I extracted the file with winRar to my desktop, double clicked RunMe.bat, connected my phone when requested with USB Debugging enabled and VIOLA, within 90 seconds (including 2 reboots) I had full access to my file system using ES File Explorer. Thanks again Jared...
