Question Can I transfer my verizon Samsung Galaxy 3 to Cricket?

Hi! Not sure if someone can help me (I'm not great with cell phones)... I bought the Samsung galaxy 3 the week it came out last summer with Verizon. It does NOT currently have service on it (my ex kept the # and I kept the phone). I am able to get wifi on it when I am at peoples homes. Long story short, cant afford verizon and he probably blacklisted it with verizon. I would like to have service from Cricket. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and was wondering if anyone out here knew if this is possible and if you can do this is this area? I would really like to keep the phone I have vs downgrade my phone since I'm not spending another $600 on a phone I already own. How do companies know if a phone has been "flashed" like if its a verizon phone vs another company? I dont know anyone else in this area that has cricket, so was looking for some help with that too. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this...
