not getting a sound when I get a text

I can't tell when I get a text because my phone doesn't make a sound. Only when I look at my phone and see the light flashing do I notice I got a text. I tried a lot of things nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

What ROM are you on? If you're on stock make sure the notification toggle is lit up green in the notification pull down. If you're on a custom ROM there are sound settings in the menu you get from holding the power button. Hope that helps.

I haven't messed with it since I got it. I don't think this has anything to do with it but my phone is disconnected for only a couple days so I can only send and receive texts and go online using wi-fi.

If you're on TW go to Settings > Sound and choose a default notification. Sometimes it gets erased or shows "unknown" and just has to be changed or as death said, notifications may just be disabled. It happens some times accidentally.

If you're on an aosp based rom, you may have Quiet Hours enabled also in Settings > Sound (if your rom supports it)

I'm going to try all that, if that doesn't help I'll probably have to take it to a store to get it check out because I'm having other issues with text messaging also.

Or go to messaging > menu > settings > notification settings.
