Buy Unlocked GSM phone or ATT Branded phone?

I am new to cricket and currently have a Verizon phone that only gets HSPA+ speeds.

I plan on purchasing a Note 4, but am not sure if I should purchase an ATT phone off contract, or a GSM unlocked phone.

I am not sure what the diff is, but currently my Verizon Phone (GS4) is unlocked, but I cannot access the LTE network.

    Thanks

    I

    Hi Amy,

Verizon phones I think are CDMA (not 100% sure) which is not compatible with Cricket's new GSM network. Right now your phone is using Cricket's old CDMA network which is going away as of March 2015.

As for the Note 4....if you buy the ATT phone off contract it will work perfectly with Cricket since ATT now owns Cricket. Unlocked phones on the other hand are not tied to one particular carrier so if you're not happy with service from carrier A you can take your phone to carrier B without having to jump thru hoops of getting carrier A to give you the unlock codes for the phone. I'm not sure if that applies tho if you buy the phone off contract. Downside is that the unlocked phone might need to be taken to a Cricket store to get them to flash it to Cricket's network. Again...not sure since I never owned an unlocked phone.

Verizon lte phones are GSM unlocked but do not have the correct radio to pick up the AT&T lte band. The biggest problem of Verizon phones is mms will not work properly all the time if you can get it to work at all.
