Battery Drain/Lag Fix (Jiminy and Stocker?)

Ok, I had this problem and it was driving me nuts from the day I flashed over to Cricket (Jiminy ROM). My phone was slightly laggy (sometimes very laggy) and my battery would drain very fast.

After investigation using tools like Watchdog and Watchtower I found that the problem was the Carrier IQ service, which is used by carriers like Sprint as well has hardware vendors to get usage data from devices. My theory (which could be very wrong) is that my device was still trying to report back to Sprint, but because I am on Cricket it would fail, retry, fail, retry, rinse, repeat... whatever the case was, it would always be nailing my CPU 40-90%

From what I gather it's not all that easy to remove Carrier IQ from a stock (or stock minus bloat) ROM, but I did easily solve the problem. All I did was open up Terminal Emulator and rename the 2 related processes and reboot while crossing my fingers.

It worked! My phone is faster, my battery lasts all day, the clouds departed, birds started singing, Skittles fell from the sky, etc, etc.

So if you're having this problem, do this:

    * You must be rooted!!
** Doing a NANDROID backup before doing this is an excellent idea!!
*** I'm not responsible for you jacking up your phone, YMMV, no guarantees, no warranties, etc, etc

    1) Download Terminal Emulator from the market
    2) Open TE and type 'su' then <enter> to become super user
    3) type: mv /system/bin/iqfd /system/bin/iqfd.bak <then hit ENTER>
    4) type: mv /system/bin/iqd /system/bin/iqd.bak <then hit ENTER>
    5) cross your fingers and reboot phone

OR, if you hate the command line, get Root Explorer (google is your friend) and open it, browse to /system/bin/, and rename iqd and iqfd to iqd.bak and iqfd.bak, then reboot.

I hope this helps someone out.

I'm thinking that it might not be present on the ROM you are running... Aslo, did you follow his directions step by step?

Strange. I wonder if maybe mine had a scrap somehow left behind from the stock rom that wasn't supposed to be there? I know I did a full wipe before the flash, but who knows.

I would download watchtower from the market and check the running processes. If the iqd process isn't listed I wouldn't worry about killing it then.

Yeah let us know how much your usage is and if you think it did anything. I've gone down to the $45 plan myself to keep my data speed up a little. Just trying to listen to my radio station in Houston.

I'd try the root explorer method. I think I got Root Explorer from here:

Download Root Explorer version 2.2 for Android

    (first google result)

    Browse to /system/bin/
touch and hold the iqd file and choose "rename", then name it something different like iqd.bak
Repeat this with the iqfd file

actually, depending on the exact error, it may mean there is no "mv", and not there is no "/system/bin/iqfd". You may need to download busybox to ensure your phone actually has the 'mv' command on it,

BusyBox - Android app on AppBrain

You could also try to CD to /system/bin/ and then list the directory contents, to verify if that file is there or not

You mean the mv command is not standard? Weird. I had no idea you needed busybox for that. Learn something every day! As a daily linux user I just assumed mv was present in all *nix systems including android.

The phones come with a lot of the basic nix tools missing, mostly because you "shouldn't" ever need them, and 99% of users do not. Heck, I don't think my phone has busy box on it right now, loaded a new ROM last week, have had no need for the commands yet, so not bothered downloading it (unless mikG comes with the commands already loaded /shrug)

Download busy box from the market, and try the commands again
