You cannot flash from 2.2 to 2.3 or vice versa without losing any of your data (that isn't saved on an sd card). The process you have to go through (SBF), is not hard to do, but you will have to find out how to do it. The locked bootloader on this phone makes it impossible to flash different OS versions without having to SBF. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to hit up google and find out just how to go through this process.

actually with him being on 2.2 he wont have to SBF to install CM7 or one of the other CM72nd init based ROMs out now for the D2 and DX. Had he taken the 2.3GB OTA, then he would need to sbf back to froyo. Google CM74D2 or phandroid's D2 section.

But lark is correct and saying you need to learn the process of SBF'ing as its the only way you will get back to stock or fix your phone if you happen to brick it.
