    Netflix on Any Android Phone

    Check out this Netflix application we installed for our flashed phone. This is only available to a limited number of phones from the Market, but the download link is provided below for the rest of us to have some fun...

    Netflix App Released for Android Phones, Sorta

    Finally, Netflix has come to the Android platform. Or some of it, at least.

    The company announced Thursday afternoon that its Netflix application would be available as a free download on the Android Market immediately, complete with “Watch Instantly” streaming support.

    But there’s a catch: Only a handful of Android phones will be able to run it.
    As of today, four HTC model phones (the Incredible, EVO 4G, G2, Nexus One) and the Samsung Nexus S are the only devices capable of running the app.
    We tried sideloading the app onto our Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, as well as onto an LG G2X smartphone; No dice. The G2X wouldn’t even open the app. We were able to access Netflix’s web store through the Galaxy Tab, but we weren’t allowed to stream movies on the unsupported device.

    Netflix product team member
    Roma De explains the holdup

    in a blog post. Essentially, the sheer number of different Android devices available is problematic, because Android lacks “standard streaming-playback features that the Netflix application can use to gain broad penetration across all available Android phones,” De wrote.

    Of course, the iPhone has had this capability for the better part of a year, and Netflix works as well on the iPod Touch and the iPad. Even Windows Phone 7 support exists. This makes sense, however, because Netflix would only have to deal with a small number of devices on these platforms.

    But developing streaming-playback support for the entire Android platform — host to over 300 different Android-powered devices — is a major ordeal. “In the absence of standardization,” wrote De, “we have to test each individual handset and launch only on those that can support playback.”

    A Netflix spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

    It makes sense, however, for Netflix to push its application out to the Android platform even in such an incomplete state. At its I/O developer conference in San Francisco this week, Google announced the debut of
    movie rentals

    through Android Market, directly from Google. Starting at just two bucks, you can rent from a list of thousands of current and older releases from Google’s Market store. After you pay for your rental, you’ll be able to watch the movie on any Android device you want, as well as your desktop.

    Obviously Google’s deal isn’t as lucrative as Netflix’s flat monthly fee of $8 a month. But with Google pushing its new movie rentals product to a gigantic market of more than 100 million activated devices, Netflix needed to act fast. So — however hurried — a launch like this and the ensuing frustration makes a certain amount of sense.

    UPDATE:

    Upset about having a device not on the
    Netflix list of supported handsets

    ? It might be a long shot, but here’s something you can try. We’ve seen a number of non supported devices running the popular movie streaming application with a slightly modified version of the apk. The nice thing about this is there is no file tinkering on your part. Just try one of the two apk files below and see if you can get this bad boy up and running. The first apk disables device checking and the second is a slightly modified version as well. I think you’ve got a better shot at getting this to work on a rooted phone, but there have been some reports of it running on non-rooted devices as well. I attempted to get this to work on my
    T-Mobile G2x

    and the
    original Samsung Galaxy Tab

    with no luck. If you manage to get this to run on your device, please don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below on whether or not you were successful, what device you’re using and if you’re rooted or not. Good luck!

    Awesome! I used it a few times but now I'm throttled from using too much data. When they release my throttle I can use Netflix again. It's amazing how clear it is. It makes me think I'm watching it in high definition.

    If you still can't get Netflix to work, try this:

    Credit goes to:
    [ROOT] How to edit your build.prop to make Netflix work on unsupported devices : Android

    --Start--

    Explanation: Netflix officially realeased for 5 devices because those are the ones that the devs tested with. They knew there would be issues with untested devices (fcs, crashes, no video/sound, etc) so they coded the app to refuse to play on anything but the tested 5. All this hack does is circumvents that restriction by making the app think you are on one of the supported ones. There some devices which seem to work fine with the app but were never tested by the devs. Such devices as the nook color, the LG optimus S/V. These work perfectly after this while others still may have problems.

    • 0) Root is required. Make a Nandroid backup! (I accidentally deleted by build.prop file and bootlooped my phone)
    • 1) Download
      ES File Explorer

      (Or any other root file editor)
    • 2) In ES File Explorer, go into Setting > Root Settings and enable both check boxes
    • 3) Navigate to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ (just in case)
    • 4) Open & edit /system/build.prop
    • 5) Change the following lines to make your phone think it is a HTC G2:

    ro.product.model=HTC Vision
    ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
    OR
    ro.product.model=Nexus S
    ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
    • 6) Reboot the phone
    • 7) Install the
      netflix apk

      (if you haven't already)
    • 8) Enjoy

    I tested this on my LG Optimus V running AOSPCMod v20110427 (Android 2.3.3). Before this, it told me that my device is not supported, now I'm watching 30 Rock episodes over 3G. I did not come up with this, I stole it from some posts on xda and compiled a nice step by step guide. I take no responsibility for screwing up your phone.
    Good luck and Enjoy
    EDIT: updated for less line changes
    EDIT2: I guess this is kinda hit or miss, but it does seem like it is working on multiple people's Optimus V's and Nook Colors.
    EDIT3: Added the Nexus S settings that worked better for some

    --End--

    I don't have a Netflix account anymore but my phone just downloaded the update the other day. It still lets me look through the movies and shows but like I said I don't have an account anymore so I couldn't watch them.

    Is Netflix working just by putting the APK on phones now? I've heard you just transfer the APK over and install it and it works.

    What happened to it only working on "supported" devices?

    Netflix is now available on nearly every phone running 2.2 or higher now. Just search in market.

    I believe it was only available on certain phones while they were testing. Netflix is out to make money, and this move should help bring in some more subscribes. They're not concerned with exclusivity deals perse.

    Absolute Wireless - Netflix is now available on your Android!

    That's good to hear! I was wondering how people were getting it so easily since I thought it was for specific devices because of the DRM issue (which I guess is no longer an issue).

    Thanks for the update.

    I'm waiting for HuluPlus to follow suit, that would be excellent.

    Hulu Plus isn't available on all Android devices already? I thought it was.
