The Ascend 2, is a great starter phone if your choosing Cricket. It has 600 mhz wich is good and it comes with 2.3 Gingerbread, which is awesome! Its the best android phone phone that Cricket has of right now, but later on this year, Cricket will be releasing the Huewei Glory wich will be a fantastic phone! But if you want a phone right now, and Cricket which is cheap, the Ascend 2 is the way to go.

The Ascend 2 is a very good starter phone, because it is an amazing phone. The original Ascend is "ok", but the Ascend 2 is sleeker, and just all around better.

I have to agree on the comparison/contrasting of the original to the follow up. My coworker just bought the Ascend 2 so I had hands on with it today. Comapring/contrasting his stock Ascend 2 to my rooted, flashed, and overclocked Ascend. I would say that it certainly feels much sleeker in hand and is far silkier in operation. Less jittering when scrolling, faster response to input, better camera (though still no auto focus), 3.5 MM headphone jack, no silly port cover flaps. I'd say hop on it if you are in the market for a beginner. I am actually waiting for the Glory...here's hoping it lives up to the hype.

I'd definitely say this is a good starter phone for someone new to the Android OS or smartphones in general.
