I was wondering, there are some files on the root that I can't edit with Root Explorer, I really wanted to change the start up and shut down tones, and the boot animations. But it wouldn't let me mount the Cust folder as R/W. Can anyone help me with that?

I wasn't messing with it. You should know that you can put in custom boot animations and start up sounds, right Salas? And I took safety measures for it.

So editting the cust.img file that is mounted onto /cust is a big no no? I was going to mount that file via loopback under Linux and zero out the ogg files.

This is the address to download Ubuntu. You will either need to put it on a usb drive or burn the .iso to a disk. The instructions are located on their site of how to do both options.

You could just click the text with the built in link on the first post like I did. It's around 650 mb and very easy to build onto USB using the other tool.

The first post has everything you need. A link to get the iso image, a link to a program that will write it to USB (if you'd rather do that than burn a cd), a link to the tarball, instructions, and even barcodes to update Superuser and busybox.

    Android rooting noob here.

So I don;t need anything else on the phone before I do this?

    You write,
"After pulling the battery on the phone to reboot it, you should then upgrade Superuser and busybox via the Market."
That sounds like I need them on there first. Do I need those programs or anything else before I do this root.

And does this thing have CIQ on it? Definitely want that off if I root it.

The directions list everything that needs to be done. As for UPGRADING superuser and busybox, the script copies older versions to the system partition. That is the initial install.

Wow that was super easy. Posting videos later today. Encoding now. The least I could do was upgrade your membership in case you ever need anything.

Thanks, s23bog for the root. First Android phone, first time rooting. Appreciate you making it so easy.

Might also throw Ubuntu on an older computer I have here and see how it runs...
