Just rooted my merc using this method, and it worked great. Now what apps are good to help find and solve headaches like widgets disappearing after phone stalls(before rooting), and remove unwanted apps(bloatware) of my own choice?

By, "this method", you mean the one I created in the first post, or the one just posted? I haven't tried that one (obviously my phone is already rooted). Just wondering if anyone has had luck with Oriax's method.

As for what apps to install, I really like Rom Toolbox. It has tons of features in the free version (free is one of my favorite four letter F words). You can remove bloatware, integrate updates into the ROM, move apps to the ROM, make backups, block ads, all kinds of stuff.

Yes the first post. I tried the other one with the zip file and could never get it to work. With yours I was having a few problems. I have Ubuntu 11 and it would run the programs but would not root. I then put Ubuntu 10.04 on a mem stick and it was done. It was easiler than long division. Thanks for the instructions and app recomendations.

Did you read any of this thread?

A couple of posts back there is a reference to another method.

Guys - Please excuse my ignorance. How do I find these older posts? I am new to all of this and am trying to root my mercury to be a superuser on it. I am buying a Evo 4G tomorrow and am wanting to try it to. Like I said, today is my first day doing any of this so please bear with me. Also, there is someone wanting to sell me a sprint galaxy s2 skyrocket. Can this be flashed to use with cricket and keep my same number? Which is the better phone, the skyrocket or the evo 4g? Again, thanks all for helping a newbie out here. Can someone send me the link to the older post that doesnt require linux?

Must be a compatibility problem with your graphics card. Newer versions wouldn't likely have that problem, but alas, 10.04 must still be used. There should be an option for low end vga graphics. I forget what the option is called exactly, but it is when you first boot up, on the grub menu.

So I'm thinking the best way to root my phone today is to:
    (1) titanium backup all system apps (this may not be necessary?) and User apps to SDcard from my old Indulge,
    (2) activate mercury by dialing *228 (therefore deactivating my Indulge),
    (3) In Mercury... Applications> Development> USB debugging, Applications> allowing Unknown Sources and connecting to computer via USB,
    (4) Root Mercury via Fastroot PLUS Toolbox after
    (5) Install Titanium backup from market to rooted Mercury,
    (6) Batch restore all User apps via Titanium Backup

Is there a question in there somewhere?
