Yes, sorry. Am I missing something? Has anyone succeeded with this method? I'm about to try this. Please let me know if there is anything I'm misunderstanding. Thanks!

The method detailed in the first post of this thread works. You can also use the method developed by Oriax, it works well too (don't have to download Linux). If you want to discuss another method, probably better to start another thread. There is only one method discussed in this thread.

This is not the newest method. If it's still stickied I'm going to go ahead and undo it.

You can try fastroot for mercury if this is too hard for you, both methods work wonders.

I tried the newer method to no avail. Do you think the Microsoft uodate has something to do with my phone not rooting?

As long as your able to get the custom recovery installed using salas guide then you can get root using my method. Try again.

Why? The end results are equivalent.

To unroot, take a look at the script. Basically, you would just remove each of the files that gets copied to your /system partition.

Well I was trying to install bloatware remover. So I installed Clockworkmod Recovery...at least I think I did. I booted into recovery, swamped the recovery.img, unplugged usb and rebooted the phone. But I don't know if it installed the Clockworkmod. Is there a way to tell?

Even then, I'm not exactly sure on how to run bloatware remover. I see I need to add the files to my phone, but how do I actually run it?

Tis no reason to unroot your phone.

As far as CWM goes, haven't ever done anything wirh it. Try rom toolbox for removing bloatware and a bunch of other stuff

    Please help,

I understand all the steps (so i think) when I go to type in the last script into the terminal i get this....

    ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ tar xvfz merc-root.tar.gz
    merc-root/
    merc-root/busybox
    merc-root/su
    merc-root/Superuser.apk
    merc-root/merc-root.sh
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ cd merc-root
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads/merc-root$ ./merc-root.sh
This script should work using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Some other versions and distributions are known to have problems mounting the partition as writeable.
Phone must be connected to PC via USB and in download mode (i.e. Power up, while holding volume up & down.

    System partition identified as /dev/sdb12
mount: /dev/sdb12 already mounted or /mnt/system_part busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb12 is mounted on /media/57f8f4bc-abf4-0000-675f-946fc0f9f25b__
    NO app in /dev/sdb12
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads/merc-root$ ^C
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads/merc-root$

Any idea what I am doing wrong?
