Hmm, I get all the way to the end and everything seems to work, but I am not rooted.
I get the pink screen, swap the recovery.img via usb.
Load it up and select the zip from sdcard. It says it was successful. restart and still no root.
Any ideas? Note, this is brand new phone pre loaded 2.3.6
    Thanks

    I should clarify...
The phone does not go into booted mode when started up. I see the superuser ap, but running it gives an essentially blank screen with "no apps in list" and "no log information"

    Thanks again

I have a question for anyone brave enough to answer it. How can I determine what apps or services or whatever are causing my time without signal to be 91%. It's been unplugged for about 16 hours now and the T.W.O.S. shouldn't be THAT high. It never was on either of my past Android phones. In fact, is this an issue with the Merc? If so, how might I go about fixing it? Anything helps, guys and girls.

Thank you very much, Salas! I've tried *228-ing the phone before, but it may help. You never know...

I think what is causing my high percentage of time without signal is autosync. I never am without a signal. I think it's a bug with how autosync works with the phone's hardware.

You can try an app called "better battery stats ". It will give you more info than you ever wanted to know about what your phone is doing. Also, my phone says my TWOS is 99% so I'm leaning towards "bug" myself because battery life would really suck if that were true but mine is doing pretty good.
BTW there is a free version of bbs in the support thread on xda.

You must of done it wrong. Make sure you get the custom recovery installed or it will not work. Also this method does NOT delete data.

You must install the root via recovery.
