[VIDEO] How to manually update the PRL on the Huawei Mercury M886

So I was trying to pull newer PRLs for the forum and noticed that a flashed phone was picking up a different PRL when using *228 than the Huawei Mercury. There was a definite need to pull the PRL from the Merc.

Changing PRLs manually can come in handy if you are not in an area where you can *228 your phone. If you have your own preferred roaming list, you might find this of use as well.

    Thanks:

PrepaidAndroid.org - writeup for the Ascend we utilized is here:

avillal87 - for finding that writeup

    Preferred Roaming List

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Preferred Roaming List (PRL) is a
    database

    residing in a
    wireless

    (primarily
    CDMA

    ) device, such as a
    cellphone

, that contains information used during the system selection and acquisition process. In the case of
    R-UIM

-based CDMA devices, the PRL resides on the
    R-UIM

    . The PRL indicates which
    bands

    , sub bands and
    service provider

identifiers will be scanned and in what priority order. Without a PRL, the device may not be able to
    roam

, i.e. obtain service outside of the home area. There may be cases where missing or corrupt PRL's can lead to a customer not having service at all.

    Installing Drivers

Download these drivers and use the appropriate installer for your operating system (32 or 64 bit Windows).

    DriverSetupDIAG.zip

    Putting phone into Manufacture Mode

On your phone open the dialer and punch in *#*#2846579#*#*. Select ProjectMenu > Background setting > USB ports setting then select Manufacture mode

Connect USB cable to the phone.

    Updating your PRL (QPST)

    1. Install QPST (link in the flashing files section of the forum). Run QPST Configuration: Open Start menu > All Programs > QPST
    2. Go to device manager and make sure you see DBAdapter Reserved Interface under Ports
    3. In QPST Configuration, if you already don't see the port that your phone is on, go ahead and click Add New Port
    4. In the Port field, add the port that you saw in Device Manager
    5. Once you have added the port and QPST recognizes your phone, click on the port your phone is under and click Start Client and choose Service Programing
    6. Select the Roam tab and click Read from phone
    7. You will now be asked for the 6-digit SPC number which is 000000.
    8. Click Browse and look for the PRL you want to use. Utilize the Cricket PRL thread if needed (http://www.cricketusers.com/flashing...rl-thread.html)
    9. Now click Write to Phone. The file will flash and the phone will reboot.

Does the Mercury have the option of updating the prl and data profile like most other phones do? Or can it only be done manually as you have outlined here?

Quick Question.. My son has a Cricket phone connected to my account. Here in Louisville Kentucky. He is away in Cleveland Ohio and will be there for some time. Will he bennfit from doing the *228 on the phone there in that area or does that really matter. I know when i traveled once before i had to do that to get a good data connection. and redo it again when i returned home. The phone is zio and setup for the Louisville Area.

Thanks in advance Erica Renee .

I believe he might. Of course he won't be able to unless that is a home market for Cricket...

Welcome. Of course I should have put this disclaimer.

IF YOU ARE ON A FLASHED PHONE, I WOULD NOT *228 UNLESS I CAN REPROGRAM MY PHONE IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG.

It's not worth it if you are unsure. Don't do this in the middle of a trip or something if you don't have the resources to fix the phone. Better to have limited talk and text than none.

    Search much?

The answer is already well documented. We will not foster laziness. Probably 50 percent of the threads on this forum use the term PRL somewhere.

Updated OP means updated original post. To end possible confusion I added a definition there. Jump to conclusions much?
