    Mercury 3 finger touch attempt mod - Fail

    Briefly reading through things that have been done to enable multitouch support on the Ascend and the Nook I decided to play around a bit.

    We all know that the Mercury has multitouch but it's only capable of 2 touches being read at a time. I tried to change that.

    You'll notice in '/etc/permissions' there are a bunch of XML files for the features of the device. More importantly 'android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.xml' is for the standard 2 finger touch. I tried to create 'android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct. xml' to enable more then 2 touches, just to see if it would work.
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

    -->
    <!-- This is the standard set of features for a touchscreen that supports
    independently-trackable multiple-finger multitouch. -->
    <permissions>
    <feature name="android.hardware.touchscreen" />
    <feature name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch" />
    <feature name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct" />
    </permissions>
    When I restarted the phone I received a few errors that "com.android.system has stopped and needs to be closed", or something of that effect. I downloaded a screen test app to see if my 3rd finger would be recognized, and it wasn't.

    Perhaps there is something else that needs to be done in order for this to work (modded kernel?) but most likely it's because the phone is not made to read more then 2 touches at once. I just wanted to share this information in case anyone else wanted to play around.

    Can't blame a man for trying. It would be awesome if the phone supported more touches.

    UPDATE: I found that the problem was having both multitouch files. I removed the older one and kept the 'multitouch.distinct.xml' file and restarted. No errors! However, after running a screen test I still only get 2 touches.

    Kernel. It always the kernel. The ascend 2 has NO multitouch.. Unless using a custom kernel.

    I've been a computer geek for a long time... since Windows 3.1 on my 486. I write HTML, PHP, CGI/Perl, and JavaScript. Aside from web development, I've done some light Visual Basic (VB4) programming, and the ever-so-cool HEX editing. I've been using Linux on and off for over 5 years now but never compiled my own kernel, just software.

    I think it's high time I start something new, like Android development.

    If you really want to try something. I don't know if its possible. There is a ICS kernel on here but from my understanding is from the Honor. Now, If you could take that kernel and make it work on the Mercury would be awesome.. Just don't know if it can be done or not.

    I've been following these forums for a while. If the people here couldn't do it, I don't think I can turn a gsm phone into cdma either.

    Doesn't mean I don't want to try
