the stock merc keyboard was always buggy to me, i replaced it asap with ics keyboard (the one by binary bulge is the one i recommend).

Your Mercury has the defualt Android keyboard and the Swype keyboard installed. You can change the keyboard by going in to Settings > Language & Keyboard or long-pressing on a text input box and selecting 'Select input method'. You must have Swype enabled in settings to choose it as an input option. Alternatively, you can try other keyboards from Google Play but it might be hard to search if you can not type 'K'.

Did you perhaps damage your phone's screen or is there a screen cover that is causing it to read your touch wrong? My first SGS had screen trouble about a week after I purchased it. Luckily that was a manufacturer's defect and was replaced for free under warranty.

You can try to download a screen touch test program from Google Play to see how your screen is reading your touch response in that area.
