They never supported the serivce, and they didn't bother to block it either. Now they're starting to charge to have one more feature to offer.

It's really not that bad when other carriers charge a lot more.

This is Business 101. If you CAN charge for it, do it. And tethering adds a load to the network, so that extra $10 they get can be used to fund expansion, LTE etc.
Cricket has 6 million customers. I would guess a third of them are on a smartphone. If 20% of that 2mil tethered at $10, thats 400,000 x10. $4 million a month in revenue.
If you know anything at all about running a business at all, you should see this as a smart move.

Yeah, I must agree.. I think you can say it's been proven that on average people that tether use more data than those who just use their phone. And, like you said, that puts a strain on the network. $10 isn't really that bad, it just would have been nice if they would have given 500 MB or so for "just tethering" before throttling. That way people wouldn't feel like they're paying $10 for what they got before for free.

I was told today by customer service that Cricket doesn't support tethering on the Mercury. I've been tethering my Mercury through PDA Net since the day I got it, and now all pages redirect me go pay the fee, yet my phone isn't supported. Anyone getting around it, or has theirs tethered through Cricket correctly? The rep I spoke to didn't really seem to know what she was talking about..

Thanks for allowing others to voice their opinions and for reading them. I'm not one of those Cricket can do no wrong people by far, but they are a business and for us to retain our service, they do have to make a profit correct? The tethering encourages people to use more bandwidth. After all, in their minds they are just one person and how much harm can one person do? Some people are tetherholics and have relied on cellular networks for their primary means of accessing the Internet.
Please check the forum and post there before PMing me. I have over 674 unread PMs due to the fact that they are issues which should have been addressed here.

I tether almost everyday on the train and never get asked to pay $10. I did this morning actually and didn't get asked. I use the wifi hotspot built into the phones settings.

I'm in St Louis. Do they only do it in certain markets?

Oh my gosh. I feel like an idiot. I knew the tethering wasn't taken off of the Mercury, but I hadn't tried it. Its in settings. :facepalm.

I asked someone this week if cricket does throttle. They told me they have never seen it happen to anyone. So do they really?

I get this message a few times a week. I am not even tethering. I found that if I just make a fast call it fixes it and im good for the rest of the day.

I tether regularly to my macbook pro with the wifi hotspot feature on my Merc. Great speeds surprisingly, will run full screen video with no fee....

Okay, now I get the message frequently, whether i'm tethering or not. Yes, I am now using the stock tether feature.
Anyone have a work-around or the like? how're you getting it to work?
Another rep told me to download a 3rd party app and use it, but they're blocking that too. Jeez.

I mean, if they'd let me pay for it, I would..
