    Cricket's First 4G Area

Cricket's first 4G area is going to be Tucson, AZ!

    LTE

network will start testing in Tucson, Ariz. in the second half of this year using Huawei's E397 dual-mode modem (shown on left), Cricket's vice president of device development Matt Stoiber said here Tuesday.

I'm currently touring two of the big Chinese manufacturers, Huawei and ZTE, and talking to some of the U.S. carriers which they're doing business with. For a carrier buyer like Stoiber, there seems to be a bit of a kid-in-a-candy-store vibe going on here, as the OEMs court him with their latest and greatest phones—such as
    the 1.4Ghz Huawei Glory

    .

Both Huawei and ZTE are gigantic infrastructure providers as well as handset makers, so they're comfortable with the shift to 4G. ZTE showed me an amazing demo based on the CSL Hong Kong LTE network where they were getting 97 megabit downloads—that's triple the speed I've seen on Verizon's 4G network, and I consider Verizon to be really fast.

Cricket has been slower to shift to LTE than Verizon, AT&T and MetroPCS because they've been waiting for device
    prices

to come down. But it's happening. The company said in March that it was targeting 2012 for its
    first commercial LTE products

and it signed a roaming agreement with LightSquared, the controversial wholesale LTE operator whose initial rollout plan was proven to destroy the GPS system.

    Soiber said LightSquared has a
    backup

plan, but he wouldn't go into details, although LightSquared recently proposed to
shuffle around some of its spectrum

    to minimize the GPS problems.

Anyway, Cricket's deal with LightSquared isn't exclusive, so the carrier can hook up with other local or rural operators as it chooses. Since Cricket currently roams a lot with MetroPCS, I wouldn't be surprised if that roaming agreement extended to LTE in the future as well.

Cricket, unlike MetroPCS, will start off its LTE push with USB modems for laptops and desktops, moving to phones once LTE phones are slim enough, cheap enough and have good enough battery life for the carrier's market, Stoiber said. He didn't have any word on plan pricing or
    data

limits; that may still be something the carrier is working out.

Tucson will be the first Cricket market to get the new tech. Why Tucson? Stoiber speculated it's about size and competition. Cricket covers a bunch of smaller cities, as well as some larger cities where they have a lot of competitors looking over their shoulder (like San Diego, a hub of the wireless industry). Tucson is a big enough place, with a bit less competition (no MetroPCS or Sprint 4G, for instance) that's within driving distance of Cricket's San Diego headquarters.

    A
    LinkedIn posting

from engineer Dale Winn suggests Cricket's next three markets: Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia. The latter two are the most competitive wireless markets in the nation, the only places where you'll find Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, and soon Cricket all offering 4G service.

We'll have some great details on which 3G and 4G networks are fastest next week in our big Fastest Mobile Networks feature. What I'm seeing in China, though, may wind up changing all that by 2012.

No, I don't think so. We probably won't see a LTE phone until next year.

My guess would be 4G will be up in all of Cricket's markets by the end of 2012.

Negatory ghost rider. Evo 3D 4G = Wimax and not LTE like Cricket will use.

We'll have to see if Verizon phones will be compatible with Cricket's LTE network and if Cricket will allow us to put their MAC address or whatever they use on their system.

Not sure of all the technical differences, but Wimax is slower than LTE. They are both very fast, but LTE is faster. LTE signal is better and can penetrate buildings better than Wimax. LTE networks are growing more rapidly than Wimax since most carriers are going that route. Sprint/Clear are in the Wimax game by themselves.

That being said, I use Wimax and get very good speeds for my use averaging 4500-9000kbps DL speeds and get very good coverage in the city limits of Charlotte.

There has been mention of Clear/Sprint becoming interested in deploying LTE networks. I don't know where this would leave current subscribers or if it would all be phased out over x amount of years. Course this is all speculation at this point.

I personally think the battle is like HD DVD and Bluray. LTE being Bluray. The picture below was made in mid 2010. It gives you some information, but is outdated (since a year is a long time when it comes to this kind of stuff).

I think it is on Verizon Wireless and MetroPCS. Cricket doesn't have 4G LTE in Delaware yet, just Tuscon, Arizona, and they're not offering it yet.

    Delaware.... what's that?

Oh that state has a few more people that Austin in it. Neato.... More than 4 times smaller in population than Puerto Rico.

    Just joking... Kinda funny though.

There are a lot of places without LTE and no one really has LTE from Cricket yet so why even ask why?

Just as an update, it looks like 90% of Cricket's Tucson area will be covered with 4G LTE.
