Cricket/AIO merging. What does this mean for us?

*****THIS HAS BEEN POSTED ON SEVERAL FORUMS*****

I got a text message on my phone today from Cricket. It told me Cricket and AIO have or are currently in the process of merging and gave me a link in the text for more info regarding what will happen and change during this transition.
    Site:
Home | New Cricket Merger Info

check it out for yourself. It gives less than ANY info. It does say though, that Cricket users will be required to buy a new device at some point when the merge is completed to continue to recieve service.

I bought my Samsung galaxy s3 from Cricket in early December.

It is 4g LTE compatible and uses a sim card, even though it says clearly throughout the Cricket site that they use CDMA devices.

Does this mean it can still be used after the merge, or will I STILL need to buy a new device? I believe it is a gsm compatible device.

I will include a picture of my phone, with the back cover showing it is a Cricket phone that has a sim card slot. That actually has a sim card in it.

What are your thoughts on this merge?

Until about mid-May or so, all that is being posted on forums, including this one is speculation. There was said to be a buyback program for devices to encourage purchase of new GSM phones such as the Galaxy 5. The merger will result in better customer service, and better coverage in some areas as our phones will work on AT&T towers instead of roaming on other carriers towers. The G3 you have should work for 12-15 months while the CDMA is being elimated.

Right now everything is very unclear. We (Cricket) have training/seminar coming up all through the end of April / early May in the Pittsburgh market that will update us on everything that's going on. Cricket does have a new logo and colors in place that have been shown on the back end, that only (as far as I've been told) that our Cricket Account Manager's and higher have been shown.

What we have been told is that only iPhone 5/5C/5S are compatible with the new network, and everyone else will be required to upgrade their phone by March 2015 (including Mr. Smith buying him and his family GS4s on Cricket today). As I've heard, as well with what AIO had been currently offering is the service of Bring You Own Device program which will carry over to the new cricket as well.

The Samsung Galaxy s5 releases to the Contract Carrier market tomorrow (04/11). It will be interesting to see when Cricket will see this phone and at what pricing.

and considering that it can only be used on cricket for what 11 months or less depending on when the change over happens in each market completes the change over. Lets say one month before the change over i purchase a new S4 or S5 and then i cant use it the next month because it will not work as a gsm phone... then they make me buy a new phone again.... i would be pissed...

Cricket won't be releasing more CDMA phones. My best guess is that the Galaxy S5 would be Cricket's first GSM phone.

There will probably be an overlapping period where both gsm and cdma phones work. During that overlap time, of maybe 6 or more months, they will warn people to trade in their phone for a gsm model. The logistics of millions of people rushing to the store to get a gsm phone cant be done in one month.

    sent from the future.

Its more carriers than Cricket and it's more gsm phones out other than at&ts. If I get down to the 4-6 Months left and theres no options for Us I'm leaving and not looking back.

i told cricket i will be pissed if i have to spend any money to replace my phone as i bought the phone and should use it forever and ever and ever. They should give me a new phone that is similar to my one sv. I think that cricket will get a big middle finger when they start to shut down each market as people will cross shop boost, tmobile, metro pcs (29 to 49 for a lte phone) and others and then make a decision on the cost of the phone and the plan of the other carrier. I may just switch to metro pcs..

To all of you planning to switch. Just remember that you need to purchase a new phone were you go. Unless you find a carrier which will allow you use the Cricket phone, which I doubt. Cricket will be offering a trade in program for our phones.

I agree with you on that one. It just sucks for the ones that just purchased new cricket phones. I'm glad I didn't upgrade my phone this year. Maybe next year?
