Cricket now wants to keep your phone when porting in?

What is this about? Is this legal? They wont port in unless you forfeit your phone to them. I received notice today to take all phones that are being ported in. WTF?

In order to qualify for the $100 instant rebate the customer must port and trade their handset. They can port without trading their handset but they will not qualify for the $100 instant rebate.

That just seems wrong. Does any other company do that? What will they be doing with my phone? Can I just bring an old crappy phone and "trade" that one in and keep my Galaxy Nexus?

Correct and confirmed starting 6/7/13 you will not get the port-in discount sale without trading in "a handset". i will be very relaxed about what handset and what condition it is in at my location. no one has told me anything specific other than "collect A handset when giving port-in discount"

You "technically" have to trade the device that has the phone number attached to it you are going to port.

We are knew this was coming, lot of dealers were scamming the system with fake port in from pageplus. Nobody should be surprise.

Another way to look at it is that cricket is giving you $100 for your phone and the choice is your to accept it or not.
