    FAQ: What does *228 do?

*228 is usually used when activating phones Over The Air (OTA). This will program your phone with your number. *228 will also update your Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL will tell your phone which towers to use, and in which order to use them. For example, if you lose your Cricket signal, and MetroPCS is available, it will roam on them before roaming on Verizon Wireless. If it roamed on Verizon Wireless first, you would be charged, when MetroPCS is available at no additional charge.

*It is NOT recommended that you do this on flashed phones.*

When should you dial *228 to update your PRL?

You only want to do *228 when you're in your home area. Don't do this when traveling.

If you're experiencing problems with your device, Cricket usually recommends doing *228.

If you're planning on traveling and leaving your home area, you should do *228.

If it's been a while since you did *228, it doesn't hurt to do it to update your PRL. Cricket will periodically send out text messages to those who may need to update their PRL.

They're trying to do away with this and have provisioning done automatically.

Also, do not do this on most flashed phones if you do not know what you're doing.

I added about not doing it on flashed phones. Thanks!
