Leap Wireless' Cricket phones head to Best Buy

NEW YORK (AP) -- Leap Wireless International Inc. is getting closer to making good on its plans to turn Cricket, its regional cellphone service, into a national player.

Its phones and plans will go on sale in Best Buy Co. stores starting Sunday, the phone company said Thursday. In the next few months, it will add the Dollar General Corp. discount chain and some Walmart stores to its outlets.

Leap, which is based in San Diego, has 5.7 million subscribers, making it the country's seventh-largest cellphone company. It sells Cricket service where it has its own wireless network, in cities such as Houston, Cincinnati, Savannah, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn.

It's now set to expand beyond those areas with the help of Sprint Nextel Corp., which will provide service where Leap doesn't. Leap announced the strategy a year ago as a way to break out of a slump. Leap hasn't posted a quarterly profit since 2007. Its growth rate has slowed as the market for prepaid, no-contract wireless service has turned fiercely competitive. One of its chief rivals is Sprint, which uses the Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Assurance Wireless brands to target this market..
