American Roaming Network
Ok, I thought I'd share for anyone else that might run into this.
I flashed a droid 2 over to cricket and I thought it went right but I guess it was wrong. Before I had the esn changed I was getting the same message that was in the sticky tut, but after I started getting a message that I was calling the american roaming network and I needed to buy a pre-paid card.
Just for general reference, I'm in vegas which is a tri-band area so that might be the problem, and I've got an older plan so maybe that's it. What I've already done is tried a few different prls. So now I'm going to try a factory reset and start from the beginning.
I'll be updating this as I try different things or whenever I figure it out in case someone else has the same problem.
ok so it's a few.....several hours later, and after trying several different prls I noticed that the 3G icon popped up out of nowhere. I still couldn't make a call or sms or mms, but I did get internet. Which I'm guessing means I'm probably going to end up switching back to the old phone.
Ok after a full reset and flashing the phone again, I'm still having no luck. So I'm currently running through every prl I can find.
I'm also going to try an account refresh whenever I get the chance. I've had mixed results with the different prls I've found, some will have 3G some won't. Others have a little blue triangle where the 3G icon normally is that no matter how much I google no one can say for sure what it is. From what I understand it's because I'm in a triband area. The thing that's really bugging me is that we have blackberry service in this area, and they aren't triband phones, so I should be able to get something. I'm also thinking there might be an issue with my plan being older than the current plans. At this point I have no clue.
For now, I guess it's going to be a lot of time in qpst and resetting the handset. Loads of fun. If anyone has any ideas, let me know here or hit me up on my skype, and I'll keep this updated until it's fixed or I give up lol.
Almost forgot, I'm also turning the roaming on and off with each and that doesn't help either.
Alright, at this point I've tried every prl I can find, to include a boost mobile prl. My thinking was that since boost is part of sprint maybe I could get a call in while roaming. No joy. An interesting development, I didn't know what else to do so I gave a metro pcs prl a try. Don't ask me why, I just did it. When I tried to make a call I got a verizon wireless recording saying I'd be transferred to an operator to make a call. I did seem to get the best internet speeds from the 42900sprint prl. The others seemed to kind of hang. I don't know if it matters but with that one, when I tried to call the 3G icon went away and came back when I hung up. I'm guessing this is normal because I'm a noob at this point. So I'm stuck at this point. It's rather frustrating, but what can you do. My guess at this point is that I either need to change my plan, or just give up and go back to my old phone. I really hope no one else has to go through this. After paying for the phone and the like 15 hours I've been screwing with it, I'm kind of pissed. On the bright side, someone different my soon be the proud owner of a droid 2. lol
After reading and reading and reading, and signing up for about 15 different forums I've decided to try the one thing I hadn't up to this point. Installing a custom rom. I've already tried to do the flash thing about three times over now and it's the only thing I haven't tried so we'll give that a go. I'm backing up the current rom as I type and I'll be installing Liberty 1.0 when that's done. I've read several different tuts on flashing and all of them recommend one custom rom or another. So, since I have nothing better to do I'll give this a shot and see if it helps at all. I kind of doubt it since I'm almost positive the problem is either my plan, or the fact that I'm in vegas, which is a triband area. Well, this is kind of scary. While trying to install the new rom it told me it can't be undone. This should be interesting so long as I don't brick the thing lol
ok after looking at one of the 15 different forums I had to sign up for to get prls that didn't work, I found a couple of people that at least had a similar problem. All of them said that they needed an account refresh and that it's there's a backlog to get them done with cricket IT.

Just because I was bored I decided to try the u2nl and autostart method in the flash tut instead of the any cut method. Yes, I know, the any cut method is the alternate that you're suppose to use if autostart doesn't work, but that's what I did. Anyway, I've found that u2nl works much faster than the any cut method. Still don't have any other services, but I'm still working on it. With the any cut proxy set, the connection was very spotty. I couldn't download aps or anything else but now I can, and things like the news updates and such are updating as they're suppose to.

So, this has been my learning experience with cricket and the droid 2.
I've learned quite a bit about flashing, and how phones work. Sadly though, I've had to admit defeat. In las vegas, a flashed non triband phone just won't work. From what I've read, cricket restricts phones from roaming in their home area, this I can say is true, or at least that's what I'm thinking is wrong. I've read that you can get a phone number from another area to work in a triband area, but the drawback to that is that I've also read that cricket will eventually catch up to you and end up restricting the phone because it's never in it's home area. That could be true but I don't know for sure and I don't have the time or money to try it.
So it's back to the old phone after a call to cricket. Maybe someone will read this and either learn something, or at least know what not to do lol.

I hope I get to visit Vegas again with a flashed phone to test this theory out. In DC and Chicago it seems that people can roam in their home network without a tri band phone.

See that's the strange thing. With the sprint hybrid prl I wasn't roaming, but everything I read said they didn't have any non triband out here, and it wouldn't let you roam inside your home area. It's all kind of weird. The really strange thing is that I didn't start getting the american roaming recording until after I had the esn change.
I was thinking I might save up a little cash and try adding a line to play with later on. I just know I have to do something because my gf is eyeballing my droid 2, and she's seen a guy running an ad in craigslist saying he can flash phones to boost here. She ain't getting my phone! lol

Just thought I'd add in one more bit that might be of interest. After I switched back to the old phone I decided I'd try to make a call and the recording is back to the standard call customer service recording instead of the american roaming network recording........the plot thickens O.O I'll keep this thread updated with anything else I find out for all the other droid 2 and las vegas cricket users in case it I find out anything useful.

This is the same thing that happens in South Texas for many people so if you can figure it out, that'd be awesome.
